Dawned On Me

This has been going around a bit already, but I think its cool and feel like sharing it here:

The video was made with the studio that produced the old Popeye cartoons and is the first new Popeye cartoon in more than 30 years.

The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams

I’ve been on a bit of an Americana/Roots kick lately.  So when I heard one of the songs off of this album on KCRW recently I had to look it up.

The album comes from lyrics found in four notebooks found in a briefcase with him when he was found dead in his Cadillac on New Year’s Day 1953.  They’ve been stored in a vault at his record company (and its successive owners) ever since.

In the mid-70s, his son Hank Williams Jr. recorded some songs based on the lyrics found, however by and large the lyrics had remained in storage.  Under the guidance of Bob Dylan, 12 artists have taken these unfinished lyrics and created songs from them.

I’m loving this album (despite its inherent sadness and loneliness).

SuperHeavy: Miracle Worker

The first single from the forthcoming album from the super group SuperHeavy (Damian Marley, Dave Stewart, Mick Jagger, A.R. Rahman and Joss Stone).  Looking forward to hearing more from this album, but this is a pretty decent start.

Love and Intimacy (and eyeglasses)

Reposted from nevermind the bricolage:

Devendra Banhart at the Rainbow House – Director’s Cut from Oliver Peoples on Vimeo.

Oliver People’s purveyors of the finest in eyewear and trading in very cool music and aesthetics have produced a short film for their 2011 campaign featuring Devendra Banhart and his real life girlfreind, exploring ideas of love and intimacy, in the glorious setting of John Lautner’s Rainbow House. Love the song.

The David Mayfield Parade

One of my favorite bands (The Avett Brothers) had a show in Temecula last Saturday.  We made a bit of an adventure of the trip, heading down from LA in time to get some wine tasting in (+1 brewery).  One of the big surprises was the opening act for The Avett’s, The David Mayfield Parade.

The official video gives you a little idea of his showmanship…live…he was a blast.  For some of my friends, imagine me on stage dancing (say from 80s night heyday or the Goodfoot) playing and singing bluegrass.  Or for those that don’t know me well, just imagine Zach Galifianakis playing and singing bluegrass.
(Oh and yes, he’s Jessica Lea Mayfield’s older brother)
