My neighbor went and saw Ira Glass at the conclusion of the Wordstock festival Sunday night. She related the following story from his presentation: (Thanks Elizabeth!)<\/p>\n
so last night <\/em>[Ira Glass] at the end ira closed with a thought<\/em> and somehow<\/em> \u00a0i think the success of ira’s show<\/em>
\nplayed a short clip <\/em>[listen to the clip at the bottom of this post]
\nfrom a guy who was trying to explain to his daughter
\nabout the crucifixion of christ
\nafter driving by a cross
\nwith jesus on it
\nhe explained that at the time “do unto others” was a radical idea
\nand he told it in little 4-year-old language
\na couple weeks later was martin luther king day
\nso he was off work
\nwhen his daughter wanted to know why
\nhe explained the story of martin luther king
\nthe girl asked
\ndid he tell the stuff jesus told?
\nher father said, actually, yes
\nthen she asked
\n“daddy…”
\n“did they kill him too?”<\/em><\/p>\n
\n and it choked him up<\/em>
\n he said<\/em>
\n there is so much wrong in the world today<\/em>
\n but i do believe<\/em>
\n that the best way, the only way<\/em>
\n to overcome the evils<\/em>
\n is to be ourselves<\/em><\/p>\n
\n it didn’t sound corny<\/em>
\n at all<\/em><\/p>\n
\n is proof<\/em>
\n that we are all of the same cloth<\/em>
\n that we yearn to hear of the joys and plights and sorrows and absurdities of others<\/em>
\n because they are all within us<\/em>
\n we hear it and we know<\/em>
\n it is real<\/em><\/p>\n
