{"id":288,"date":"2008-11-07T13:47:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-07T20:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rhinoblues.com\/thoughts-wp\/?p=288"},"modified":"2016-06-03T11:42:46","modified_gmt":"2016-06-03T18:42:46","slug":"five-guys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rhinoblues.com\/thoughts\/2008\/11\/five-guys\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Guys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had heard about this place <a href=\"http:\/\/fiveguys.com\/\">Five Guys<\/a> as an East Coast version of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.in-n-out.com\/default.asp\">In-N-Out<\/a>.\u00a0 One of my friends, who spent the summer in New Jersey, even claimed it was better than In-N-Out.\u00a0 Since I&#8217;m now working in Torrance and one of the So. Cal. locations is a short drive away in Carson, I decided to check it out for the first time for lunch today.<\/p>\n<p>Like In-N-Out, Five guys has a pretty simple <a href=\"http:\/\/fiveguys.com\/menu\">menu<\/a>.\u00a0 The main difference, they have a bunch of toppings you can choose from to customize your burger (for no extra charge).\u00a0 That and they also serve hot dogs (while In-N-Out does not).\u00a0 The other difference&#8230;cost.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll get into that later though.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Burger<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rhinoblues\/3011327098\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3003\/3011327098_93f1bf4839_m.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">Click image for larger version<\/span><br \/>\n<\/i><br \/>\nI ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with lettuce and BBQ Sauce (yes I like simplicity).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little hard to see in the photo, but the patties are definitely thicker at Five Guys.\u00a0 Maybe not quite twice as thick&#8230;but close.\u00a0 Being able to have bacon was pretty nice as well the BBQ sauce.\u00a0 All in all, it was a pretty good burger and definitely filling (as I was pretty full just finishing the burger).\u00a0 The only complaint was perhaps the cost.\u00a0 The burger alone was $5.59.\u00a0 That is not much less than the cost of the Double Double combo meal at In-N-Out (though I don&#8217;t remember the exact cost at In-N-Out at the moment).<\/p>\n<p><b>The Fries<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rhinoblues\/3010491097\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3179\/3010491097_d9bdd40db4_m.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\"><i>Click image for a larger version<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here is where Five Guys have In-N-Out beat hands down.\u00a0 The fries are fresh and cut at the restaurant like In-N-Out, however they are a thicker cut fry at Five Guys.\u00a0 For $2.49, you get more fries, than a regular order of fries at In-N-Out (There were plenty still left inside my bag).\u00a0 I also found the standard cooking time at Five Guys to be much better.\u00a0 At In-N-Out, I often find the fries to be a little undercooked (so end up ordering them lightly well done).\u00a0 The cost is a little more at Five Guys, but I think you get a good value here.<\/p>\n<p><b>Overall verdict<\/b><\/p>\n<p>My order of Bacon Cheeseburger, Fries and a Drink came to $10.58 (including tax).\u00a0 Like I mentioned above, I remember the Double Double combo meal being around $6 (including tax).\u00a0 In fact I&#8217;m pretty sure I can get a Double Double, Fries and Shake at In-N-Out for less than my meal at Five Guys.\u00a0 So is it worth $4 more at Five Guys?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not so sure.\u00a0 It has the nostalgia of In-N-Out to overcome and isn&#8217;t significantly better than In-N-Out.\u00a0 Sure I could cut down the cost a little by getting the smaller single patty &#8220;Little Bacon Cheesburger,&#8221; and probably will the next time, since I was unable to finish my fries.\u00a0 Will I go again?\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 They definitely beat out Fatburger or any of the other major burger fast food joints.\u00a0 However, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;ll ever replace a Double Double, Fries, and Neapolitan Shake from In-N-Out.<\/p>\n<p>*<i>update 11\/12\/08:<\/i>\u00a0 A Double Double, Fries and Shake at In-N-Out is $6.42.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had heard about this place Five Guys as an East Coast version of In-N-Out.\u00a0 One of my friends, who spent the summer in New Jersey, even claimed it was better than In-N-Out.\u00a0 Since I&#8217;m now working in Torrance and one of the So.
