But during a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stitcher.com\/podcast\/panoply\/think-again-a-big-think-podcast\/e\/39-maria-popova-writer-editor-of-brain-pickings-the-45166018\" target=\"_blank\">interview on <em>Think Again<\/em><\/a>, I found myself concerned with the commodification of the word \u201cfriend\u201d in our culture. We call \u201cfriends\u201d peers we barely know beyond the shallow roots of the professional connection, we mistake mere mutual admiration for friendship, we name-drop as \u201cfriends\u201d acquaintances associating with whom we feel reflects favorably on us in the eyes of others, thus rendering true friendship vacant of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2014\/08\/13\/emerson-on-friendship\/\">Emerson\u2019s exacting definition<\/a>.
